According to Gmail, the number of ads shown per Gmail user is already being cut by more than a third. Signals from e.g. Priority Inbox that indicate important and unimportant messages are used to enable Gmail to continue to show fewer, better ads in Gmail. As with many Gmail features, you can control the use of these signals from the Gmail Settings page.
