To enable Background Send, go to the Labs tab in Settings. Scroll down to find Background Send and then Enable it.

Gmail lets you manage other mails while sending mail in the background
Gmail Labs has come out with a new experimental feature called Background Send. Once enabled, it allows the sending of mails in the background while reading and managing other mails.
To enable Background Send, go to the Labs tab in Settings. Scroll down to find Background Send and then Enable it.
